Taylors Inter-College Scrabble Tournament

Currently in the planning stages is a proposed Inter-College Scrabble tournament to be hosted at Taylors College Subang Jaya. Proposed date is 12-13 August 2006. In order for the event to come to be, we first need competitors, so those of you Scrabble junkies who've been playing since school days, or even newcomes wanting to get serious, send in your names to indoor_games05@yahoo.com. Hopefully a fortnightly scrabble practice group can be formed to prepare for the showdown this August!

RESPECT THE RINGGIT PLEASE!!!

DISAPPOINTED I AM. After years and years of hoping and waiting, the news that a collectible miniature line of WW2 figures coming out seemed to good to be true. And it was precisely just that. I know our ringgit isn't exactly the biggest meanest heavywight contender out there in the free market, but still, RM7 for just a 1.5cm miniature? You gotta be kidding me! I thought the 'ringgit unpegged' had a whole new meaning. Apparently not. Before the bunch of you loaded folks who regularly indulge in weekly fixes of Magic and Star Wars Minis start, I DO KNOW that collectible CARDS/MINIS are an expensive. But please please lets go into the itty-bitty-calculatty details first.

Price for booster in US = approx $10-$12
Should be converted price in ringgit= RM12x 4 = RM48 at most
Actual price for a pathetic booster of 9 miniatures = RM60

Oh, come - ON! don't tell me shipping and import tax cost RM12 a pack??!?!? Especially when they're shipping in bulk!!! All this points to one conclusion. Comics Corner is screwing us bad.
So much for investing in collectable games. I'll just stick to boardgames for now. AND SO SHOULD YOU. (not caring if this sounds like a marketing ploy on the part of boardgames selling on this site) They're worth you're every sen, and they're a one box-one payment kinda thing. No need to splurge through 9-10 absurdly priced booster packs to get that one super-ultra-...-rare just to ensure you get the most out of the game. And with all that extra cash saved, I'm getting worried about my boardgame storage space.

TOURNAMENTS!!!

Competition drives the soul. Be it on the field with a ball or on the board with your hand of cards. HIGS is working to organize a fusball tournament and Help's 2nd Monopoly championship by the end of the year, so stay tuned for more updates on this. In the meantime, you can play a part by spreading the word to your friends. Prizes are proportional to the number of participants!

Kickstart

This coming term, HIGS promises to roll-out its activites that never-came-to-be last term, due to the nearing AS exams. Mind you, the whole commitee consistes of A-Levelers.(Come on ADP, foundation, business, law - whatever! students A lot of planning has been done, and preparations are almost complete. The following is a list of the events we plan to conduct.

1. Designer Boardgames Play-Test Session once every forthnight.
Every month, we will be introducing 2 new designer games to members. These are rented from the supplier, and at the end of the day, will be returned. Therefore, your only chance to try out these games will be at the test drives. Pls confirm your attendance through the chatterbox as I need to know how many sets to bring

2. DotA Tournament in August
For all you DotA fans out there, this is a chance to finally earn a reward for the skills you've acquired by burning holes in your pockets at cybercafes. For those of you who think you shouldn't join despite your love for the game because you think that I'm not good enough to win, let me tell you, you're letting others who really aren't that good win simply because you weren't there to stop them! XD More details on this coming soon! In the mean time, PRACTICE. So you'll be more than good enough!

3. Free Foosball Games
This is not confirmed yet. Last years, HIGS was given a set amount of money for its members to play foosball for free, yet as time went on the money became less and less. And now that we have a new commitee, we have to apply for this 'free foosball' treat again. I've sent in the request. I haven't gotten an affirmative yet, (3 months already) but I haven't gotten a rejection either. So this week I will be going to ask Col. Goh about it. You can do your part too. Pray.

4. Game Convention at end 2005/early 2006
We hope to turn the DSA into a museum for designer games. There will be free plays, tournaments, and lucky draws. There will be gamers from Taylors as well. (The seeds of designer boardgaming are being sown across all major colleges alike!) Like the above, this would depend on how response for designer games is. Hopefully, it will be grow into something big in this so called 'college of achievers'. If response is poor, well, then there'll still be something for the loyal fans. But it'll be called Mini-con instead of Game-con.
